Most popular music is in 4/4, which for the non-musicians reading this, means that there are four quarter notes in a measure. After all, lots of them are just the vocals of one song on top of the instrumentals from another. Listening to mashups, you might think creating one is easy.
Ultimately, it’s just an extreme version of music based on a sample, in which the entire song is made with pieces of others - rather than borrowing one instrumental line or some lyrics - and none of it is original. They’re also not complicated the mashup is a musical performance more than it is a composition. To be clear, mashups aren’t new to the music scene, and their popularity is actually on the decline, at least in terms of academic interest in how they work. I just couldn’t find any music that really inspired me. During 2020, I made no new playlists, discovered no new artists and only listened to string orchestra soundtracks, jazz standards and music that was on pop stations between 20.

For the past two years, movie score composer Hans Zimmer has been my top artist on Spotify. The kind of person about whom everyone says, “Oh yeah, their playlists are always great.” You know, the kind of person who plugs their phone into the speaker in the car or at a party and introduces the rest of the group to an obscure new artist. I’ve always wanted to be one of those people with good music taste.
